The Harpsichord – A Fresh Voice from the Past
Thursday, May 10th at 10:30am

RSVP to 925-932-0100 or reply to this email.

Please join us for an interesting and educational journey as Dr. Ruth Holmes guides us through the history of the Harpsichord from its earliest days to its revival in the 20th century. Discover how the early harpsichord developed, how it lost favor to the pianoforte, and how a new generation of musicians rediscovered its grace and charm in the 20th century. This is a paramount experience for teachers and students alike as Dr. Holmes’ use of interesting and noted historical musical examples makes the journey both educational and entertaining for all.

For over 35 years Dr. Ruth Holmes has been a part of the music faculty of Lubbock Christian University. During that time she has served as Interim Chair of Communications and Fine Arts and as President of the Faculty Senate. She has edited Eighteenth Century keyboard music published by Oxford Press and has contributed book reviews to the American Music Teachers Journal. Dr. Holmes has also served as the Chair of Musicology and Early Instruments for the Music Teacher National Association. Her interest and passion for early music are captured in her presentation and we would love for you to join us in this very special event.

There is no-charge for this event – please attend as our guest!

The Dr. “G” Piano Concert
Saturday, May 12th at 7pm

Kenn Gartner, or Dr. G, began piano study at two and a half years of age. He first studied violin with his mother. But, after breaking two violins, his mother decided on something sturdier. At eight, he was a member of the Children’s Opera Company of New York, and sang in many performances at City Center, Winter Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera. While in high school, Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia, he studied piano at Mary Baldwin College. He holds degrees from Cornell University, Juilliard, and The Aaron Copeland School of Music. He received his Ph. D. in Piano Technique from New York University’s Steinhardt School, where he studied with Eugene List. He was also quoted by musicologist Maurice Hinson in the book Music for More Than One Piano.

With appearances in over 60 countries, Dr. G’s experiences range from a command performance for the Mayor of Halifax in Nova Scotia to Master Classes in Piano Technique at The Shanghai Institute in China, as well as other venues. These experiences form the basis in part for his lecture/recital.

Nationally certified as a teacher of both piano and of voice, Dr. G teaches extremely gifted and extremely committed students. He is active as an accompanist, a performing artist, a conductor of both choruses and orchestras, and a coach of performance practice and of voice.

Dr. G has been a resident of California for seven years and during that time he has a Herbst Theatre recital under his belt and he was also recently elected President and the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Bay Area Summer Opera and Theater Institute (BASOTI). He looks forward to many more rewarding experiences in his lifetime.

Visit Dr. G’s website for more information about this renowned pianist and teacher.
